Students will receive a Materials kit but will also need to purchase three additional items: a small amount of cold wax medium, a selection of at least three oil paints and some odorless mineral spirits (approximately $40 cost in addition to the $275 registration).

If you love expressive photography that blurs the line between classic painting and contemporary photography, this class is for you. Beginning with a digital photographic image on paper, you will apply color and texture using oil paint and cold wax, a commercially available wax medium that requires no heat unlike traditional encaustic methods. No prior painting experience is needed.

Discover how to set up your cold wax work area using a tabletop and wax paper palette for mixing paint.

Explore adding color and texture using bowl scrapers and brushes. Let your imagination infuse your images with intrigue and artistic vision.

It's your call whether to change your image a little or a lot! During the class you work along with Jill as you discover new options for your photography and practice using cold wax and oil paint.

Cost - $275
Includes two 2-hr. online Zoom sessions and a materials kit

Getting Ready for the Two Online Sessions

A Materials Kit - Registered and paid participants receive a materials kit sent directly from Jill.

Buy a few more things - Three additional items should be purchased separately: the cold wax medium, a selection of oil paints and some odorless mineral spirits. Jill will send links for these and some optional items for even more creative options.

Print a few images - Your Cold Wax kit will include some sheets of Arches Oil paper. Before the second class, print two images on this paper. Jill will send info to help you with image selection and printing.

A “Getting Ready for Class” letter with more details on class preparation will be sent to registered participants before class. Participants should have access to a well-lit, flat working surface with a computer or tablet screen visible for the Zoom session.

The area should have good ventilation to reduce the exposure to solvents. A box fan blowing air out an open window is ideal. Because the wax medium is not heated when using cold wax techniques, there is less exposure to the harmful fumes that are released during other hot encaustic methods, however, care should be taken to reduce the amount of solvent fumes in the studio area. More safety info is available online with suggestions for keeping oil painting studios healthy and safe for artists.
